KNOCK, 2020

“KNOCK” is an alphabet inspired by constructions. It was stumbled upon when exploring the possibilities of type by iterating a lot of potential ideas, very quickly. I was experimenting with the opportunities in 3D typography and swiftly built a sculpture produced out of scrap wood and left over nails.
With the aim to reveal recognisable characters as you looked at the structures from different directions. This resulted in a uniquely intuitive method, giving the constructions an unconventional aesthetic.

The letters themselves play with perspective and negative space. When standalone the letters can seem abstract and oddly proportioned. However, when seen as a collection or family, the abstract perspectives and negatives space begin to form the silhouettes of an alphabet. This is achieved by a combination of recognisable and unidentifiable profiles. These work together to support one another, enabling for a readable and coherent alphabet. The use of varying perspectives creates rhythmic words that undulate throughout their length.
