increasingly removed from their raw material origins and production processes. Plywood is engineered to be a consistently stable and predictable board yet is made using veneers of wood, a natural material that is diverse and characterful in its structure&nbsp; and appearance. Manufacturers have to overcome the many obstacles this natural material poses, such as shrinkage, warping, knots and cracks, in order to create uniform boards. Plywood board restrains and conceals this unruly world of natural beauty within a uniform straitjacket. Splitting Image releases this tension between the regulated and untamed, displaying the true beauty of plywood construction. &nbsp; By splitting plywood, a cross section of its production and interior workings is revealed, bringing back the natural beauty of the organic material and our attempts to tame unruliness. The resulting outcome, ‘Splitboard’, rediscovers plywood as a decorative material by reconnecting it with its raw beginnings and manufacturing process. They are chipped and sent away as fuel, or even into landfill, in order to remove them as ‘efficiently’ as possible.Currently, urban trees are not utilised or celebrated after they fall simply because cities lack the infrastructure to process them for economic benefit, and timber supply chains are not structured around urban wood.Throughout their life, these trees have had a significant role in the urban ecosystem and community. They are just as valuable once they’ve fallen as they are when they’re standing. To chip and remove these trees denies their potential to live on and play a role in a community’s collective experience and memory.In nature, the falling of a tree initiates a new stage in its life cycle, as multiple organisms gather to break it down into smaller parts, enabling it to return to the ecosystem it once thrived in. “If a tree falls…” is a reflection of this process in the urban landscape, through craftspeople and makers reshaping the tree into tangible artefacts.In order to do this, a ‘roots-up’ approach is taken by creating localised community processing systems, where residents are encouraged to interact with the material on-site through workshops and demonstrations. Every part of the tree should be utilised, and is an opportunity for a new lifecycle within the urban ecosystem; whether that’s the trunk becoming chair legs, the branches becoming spoons, or the bark being used as natural dye. Starting with the spare wood in my shed I started building a structure to occupy the outside space of my house. I would watch the installation slowly grow, peaking out from behind the shed. Each beam was added in reflection to the space - the uneven floor, the broken brick, the gaps in the trellis. l began to trawl through skips, bins and facebook to find any second hand wood I could. Travelling to all corners of the city with broken beds, old shelves and project surplus under my arm, the structure became a culmination of the beams previous lives, a sort of material meeting place. The days haul would sit in the garden, bungeed together in a Tetris orientation, waiting to participate. Warping with the weather the beams would pull and twist each other in all directions; the structure changes. The installation sunk into the corner of the outside space hiding. Unlike any photograph I’d seen before I delved into its production and discovered a 1930s 9-lens camera. It was the first example of photogrammetry, a technique now used to create 3D images and virtual realities. Exploring the technique of analogue photo stitching and the reconstruction of an image, I began to use the format that combines 9 images of different perspectives to create immersive and interactive installations. Recreating the reality of images by unfolding their standard format and reconstructing it across multiple frames enables the viewer to feel an exaggerated sense of direction, relation and space. By looking at a photograph for 4 seconds you are already looking at it for much longer than the camera ever did. Moving image (film) can create the perception of time by stacking photographs in sequence. Its provisional frames often use montage, where each frame asks for the next reframed image, to build a reality of narratives. Photogrammetry has extended our perspective on traditional framing and the timescale of images. By stitching photographs on multiple planes, it rebuilds our perception of time and space within the image. Unlike moving image and photography where you are aware that the off-space of the frame continues in a decisively different way, photogrammetry constructs the off-space in real time and allows you to navigate within a world of constant reframing. The interaction between the frame and the dynamic of the image is stretched. Walking through your local high street you will see; hundreds of cigarette butts acting as monuments to social interactions, chewing gum, gripping to the pavement and wrappers, dancing in the wind. We know that this is damaging to the environment, so, why do we often step over it? Waste plays a significant part in our everyday activities, documenting our habits, lifestyles, sociality, cleanliness, tastes and personalities. It’s linked to what you’ve bought, eaten, ordered, worn and thought. Subsequently becoming ingrained within our habitual behaviour. Yet, we all too easily disassociate this waste from ourselves. This dynamic relationship with our waste is due to our constantly shifting value towards it. After purchasing an item, a receipt can hold a lot of value in the first few days of a purchase in the off-chase you return it. But, if you don’t intend to return this object, the receipt instantly looses all value.&nbsp; A pack of chewing gum in your pocket, that you longed to have for days, becomes obsolete once finished. This shift in value and lack of sentimentalism towards waste allows it to become litter and has a knock-on effect on many of the things we do care for, such as the environment. With more than 4.5 trillion cigarette butts dropped each year, litter is undeniably part of our environment. Yet, we don’t see it. We have climatized to the sight of unnatural materials in our view of our surroundings. We will walk over wrappers or stamp out cigarettes without a thought. As soon as litter leaves our hands, we experience a shift of agency. We think it’s no longer our responsibility, but it is. Frustrated because people were struggling to inspire themselves, we started this collective with an aim to build a community by sharing creativity of students whether it be poetry, installations, digital work or analog experiments. Starting with zines of collated submissions, we quickly progressed onto exhibitions showcasing local and far afield work in any medium, and workshops focused on music and drawings, textile and customising or collaging and storytelling all around the Netherlands, with plans for many more. We strive to take people out of the comfort zones, decontextualise, destroy and distort their existing works as well as exposing them to the opportunities of collaboration. We have a fascination for analog techniques and see opportunity in its limitations which we use to free peoples creativity from the looming societal pressures to have clean polished work and help them
